Municipal World recently invited Essex Power CEO & President John Avdoulos to discuss PowerShare in an episode of its ‘MW Shares’ Podcast.
As Essex Power President & CEO John Avdoulos describes, PowerShare is the “first fully-integrated project in North America of what’s called a Distribution System Operator, also known as a DSO.”
This project, which in its initial phases will take place in Leamington, ON, will create a near real-time, local electricity market in order to fully utilize existing assets and ensure grid reliability.
CEO John Avdoulos explained: “The DSO is meant to provide additional capacity into a region that has some constraints. The concept behind the local electricity market is to take existing assets that might be sitting idle or only being used by the actual owner of that asset and using it for another purpose. In this case, it’s to supply additional electricity to the Leamington area, where we currently have some constraints.”
